Kimberly Davis, could you tell us a little about being the #1 ranked winner in the StartupNation Leading Moms in Business Competition?
I'm so excited!! For the last two (2) years Hugga Bebe has been in second (2nd) place through StartupNation. This year we won! So excited. I truly hope this will open some new doors and let Hugga Bebe shine.
What is your business called and what do you do?
Hugga Bebe is the name of the company. Our Company sells a baby product, infant age though toddler years, to use in activity centers, jumpers, walkers, high chairs, park bucket swings and more. Hugga Bebe gives children 360 degrees of support both upper torso support and proper back support allowing children to experience comfort and security during playtime. We all know as parents that these seats on these products just don't fit our children however with Hugga Bebe they fit perfect every time.
Please tell us how and why you became an entrepreneur and how long you have been one.
In 2007, the idea come to me in a dream two night's in a row. After the second dream I decided to make it for my Nephew and see if it would work. BRILLIANT! It worked better than I could have dreamed. I filed for a patent in 2007 then in 2008 started the company.
How unusual! What a neat story!
How did you fund starting your business?
Our home was paid for so we borrowed against it and we had funding in our 401K. That's how we started.
How many hours do you work in a week?
A ZILLION…no really, around 70 plus hours on Hugga Bebe.
What has been your biggest business challenge as an entrepreneur?
WOW what a question. I could write a book on this question. Funding was a big one. I was scared to risk everything I had worked so hard for and throw it all at this one idea. Building the brand has also been a challange. When you are not a big corporation building a brand takes tens of thousands of dollars. When you are a start up company those funds are hard to come by. It seems buyers only want to invest in companies that have a proven track record and have been on the market for many many years. When you are a new company coming into an existing market, the buyers are not as apt to want to deal with you because they want the oldie but goodie brands that have been known to sell. With that being said not all buyers have that mind set. It makes it hard on those products that are TOP notch and can SELL to really get their foot in the door.
How did you or do you overcome your biggest challenge?
Hard work. When I say this I truly mean those words. A little hard work never hurt anyone and I strongly believe that. If you want something, then you have to go fight for it.
What advice would you give to a new entrepreneur?
Know your market before you set sail. Understand the challenge you will face. Understand the cost of the money it will take. Talk to your family- everybody needs to be on the same page about finances, time, and your plan. This is not an overnight deal. This is an investment that will grow in years to come. If you think you will get rich overnight, then think again. Work hard to get what you want and don't ever listen to those who have the negative thoughts pouring your way. Hold your head up high and know you can do this. It's up to you to have the positive mindset, it's up to you to understand your business, and it's up to you to find the way to sell your goods. Just remember starting a business in most cases will be up to one person and that person is YOU.
