You’ve seen success stories plastered across the headlines and marveled at entrepreneurs who made it big. Did you ever wonder if they had a lot of help and encouragement? Perseverance isn’t just about the big fall, either. It’s about plugging along, day after day, even when you’d rather get off the merry-go-round.

2. Desire to learn.

Nothing comes easy in the world, especially not success. You’re going to have to work hard for everything you get. Part of that commitment means continuing your
education…indefinitely. This is no joke. There is always going to be someone out there who is smarter, faster, and younger than you. But if you can stay on top of your game with a combination of knowledge and expertise, you can offer clients more than the cocky college grad who’s angling for your slice of the pie.

3. Interpersonal communication skills.

If you want to make friends and influence people, you’d better be able to connect with them (whether it’s in the buttoned-up board room of over a couple of cocktails at the local watering hole). Knowing what to say, and when, are traits that can be taught. But the ability to read people and bend them to your will requires a sort of sixth sense that you either have or you don’t.

4. Flexibility.

Things aren’t always going to go the way you envision. There are outside factors at play and they will throw a wrench in the works every so often. The ability to adapt to changing problems and find solutions at the drop of a hat is invaluable to any enterprise. If you can’t roll with the punches and come up swinging, you’re never going to win the fight.

5. A positive attitude.

Nobody ever got ahead by being a Negative Nancy. There will probably be
times throughout the pursuit of your enterprise when you’ll want to cry your eyes out, quit, or commit sepaku in your office. The ability to see every pitfall as an exciting challenge to beovercome can be a real boon during the tough times. If you don’t come by this skill naturally, you can certainly try to train yourself by spouting affirmations and bolstering your belief in yourself. The trick is to commit to these ideas whole-heartedly and see every failure as an opportunity to try again.
